Rebecca,. Clean the cabinets with a metal cleaner, let dry completly. Find a color of metal paint you like and paint them. You can put knobs on the doors for decoration. Try contact paper inside on your shelves. Aloha!

    How to Paint Cabinets

Make sure they are clean and dry. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint with 220 grit sandpaper or a green Scotch Brite pad.. Use a tack cloth or damp rag to remove dust after sanding. Prime with a stain blocking primer like KILZ. Acrylic or water base paints are low-fume and clean up easily with water. Alkyd or oil-based paints require good ventilation because the paint contains solvents that can irritate your lungs and make you feel sick. Alkyd options require mineral spirits for cleanup, but they provide a hard, durable paint finish. Whichever you use, buy the best-quality paint you can afford for a lasting kitchen cabinet finish. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

You can also glue on molding before painting if that is a look your looking for.

When I was renting an apartment, the kitchen was a disaster and needed help. I asked the owner if I could paint the metal kitchen cabinets and also put up some wall paper and he said, Yes that I could go ahead & do it. Now, this was like 30 years ago... at that time they did not have a primer in spray paint, just paint. I used spray paint and they came out beautiful! The original color of the cabinets were white, but they had turned yellow over time. I spray painted them white and it took 2 coats. BE AWARE THAT YOU NEED TO WEAR A MASK WHEN SPRAY PAINTING IN A ROOM. I did NOT wear a mask and ended up in the hospital barely breathing! Now days they have a primer in spray paint, so I would use that for 1 coat, then spray the 2nd coat of the color of your choice. (also open windows before spraying and keep them open after spraying for as long as possible)

    Hi Rebecca!

I don't have any tips for you, but just wanted to say how completely and utterly JEALOUS I am of your metal cabinets!! You may want to do a Google search for themmmthe brands that I am familiar with from the 50s are Lyon and Geneva. So, if you ever get tired of them, please know that they have resale value. You might also get some inspiration for colors, in case you would like to go true to period with the painting.

Best of luck to you on your project!
