Hi Marita. If there is paint already on the vase you could use a fine grit sand paper to sand it down. If there is no paint on it, you can use a paint like Annie Sloan Chalk Paint or Fusion Mineral Paint and paint right over the vase.... no sanding needed ;) Hope that helps!
