Start by going to the city building department, and pick up a handout that’s entitled, “decks and balconies”.
Then you’ll begin to understand what the framing spans are, the fasteners required, the footings required, hand and guardrails, etc and then you can plan your design around the city’s requirements.
After you’ve poured over the hand out, then it’s time to start designing and planning your materials list, on graph paper, to scale.
Your wish list includes a 4 inch thick concrete slab for the travel trailer to sit on, that requires additional design and construction Methodologies criteria.
Because what you’re essentially describing is a garage with a deck on the roof, the structural deck is going to be free spanning over the trailer.
This is talking about more than the city’s hand out will cover, in terms of structural design. That’s assuming you expect to walk on the deck over the trailer below.
We’re talking a 12’ span with decking made to hold a Live Load of at least 300 lbs per square foot, by Code. Codes are there to protect us from dangerous construction and faulty workmanship.
At some point you’re going to have to get some professional design help or change your design criteria.
My firm and other firms can do these kind of spans-calculations, and the required drawings and specifications,
and and then you’re going back to have to have somebody who understands how to build off of the plans and has all the tools to do so.
I just want to build a deck going across the front of my travel trailer and where the door is for my bedroom is where I want the room added on the room will be big enough for like a huge walk in closet.
Hi Goldie, hope this helps you out.
