Hi. I love General Finishes gel stain. They have a great "open" time so allow you lots of time to get the stain on and looking great. They also have a gel top coat which holds up beautifully. To prep your piece you can either use a stripper or just sand it down with an orbital sander and sandpaper. I have done a lot of coffee tables this way. I absolutely love general finishes gel stain also! If I don't use gel stain, I use citristrip to remove an existing finished before restaining.
