Here is some information I hope will help you Sandy. I understand about a limited budget for such projects. I found one, but there are more if you click on "explore projects" then "paint" and type "paint bathtub" in the search box and hit enter and you may find a better one you like. How To Paint A Bathtub Easily & Inexpensively
That’s a good question I hope someone tells their direct experience rather than a link to how to do the project. Before investing the time energy and money to do this it would be nice to know how long it lasts.
Personal experience says 6 months...........maybe. I spray the shower after every time with one of the Dollar Store type cleaners. Never used abrasives. The landlord also painted the bathroom sink. It didn't last as long as the shower tub. In all fairness, maybe the application was not done correctly.
When I did the check list upon taking the house, I did note that the tub and sink were painted. Now, after 3 years, it is pretty depressing to look at. I did not want to be responsible for "wear and tear".
You can get the tub kits at your local home improvement store though it may only last a few years. A pro can do it too though at that rate, you could get a new tub. Try a Habitat ReStore, they’ll have cheap tubs.
Use Rustoleum refinish kit for showers\tubs mix chemicals right and apply with roller
