Don't buy toxic chemicals! Other things work as well and remember that everything ends up in our water supply eventually! Do you have a steamer to clean it? If not, I have found BIOKLEEN (available at natural food stores or online) or white vinegar and baking soda good for cleaning. The if you feel the need to polish, SIgnature Cream Polish is good or even olive oil. BUT- whether you clean or polish, always rub WITH the grain of the stainless steel. If you are careful, you might try some very fine steel wool on the worst parts- if the scratching was bad it may be permanent but if so, this may be worth a try.
Once stainless steel is scratched, there is no going back. Best you can do is minimize for appearance sake. Here are some things you can try.

Use a stainless steel scratch removal kit such as Scratch-B-Gone or Siege Stainless Steel Sink and Cookware Scratch Remover. Scratch remover kits generally contain a polishing compound and a set of abrasive pads. You’ll work from the coarsest grit to the finest to remove scratches from the stainless steel and restore the surface.
