Laura CooperKaren BrunckUnique Creations By Anita

I have a front door that was gray when it was purchased. Then someone painted it white and then green. The paint is now peeling. How do I prime this door so I can paint it with out it peeling in a few years ? Do i just clean it or prime it ? Help. I also have a hot water heating system. How do I paint these base boards ? They too are metal.Thank youKateina

You need to remove all the peeling paint then sand the surface smooth. Use a suitable primer and once dry paint it with a gloss paint.

Hi Katrina. The peeling paint may be due to the use of latex based paint over oil based. You'll unfortunately have to remove all the peeling paint away by scraping and sanding. Use a high adhesive primer, then paint your new oil based color. Do the same for your metal baseboards. The oil based paints will also help prevent that on the metal.😊

I agree that you need to remove any peeling paint. If you have a painted surface that is still sound, you can leave that as long as it doesn't leave ridges. There are several paints available that are called DTM paints, or direct-to-metal paints. My favorite is PPG Paints full acrylic dtm. I painted an entire aluminum exterior with this paint and it is beautiful and has no damage or fading after 2 years of winds, sun, rain, snow and hail. The primer you use must be specific to the metal you have. Use a magnet. If the magnet sticks, then you have ferrous metal which can accept most any paint that is metal appropriate. The DTM paints may not even require a primer but you need to check with the manufacturer. If the magnet does not stick, then you probably have aluminum. This will require an ALUMINUM PRIMER prior to using a DTM paint. You CANNOT use any latex paints on aluminum. Aluminum is reactive to latex.
