If you’d like to do is slate patio all you would have to dig down about 6 inches put some P gravel down first then some sand over that and then place the slate into the sand so that it sits without moving and then after that I would put sand .you would put sand around to place it in between the slate with the broom to set it then hose it to set sand
Slate & Flagstone are porous & sometimes spall (flake) over time. I would look into UV stable sealers.
I would make sure that the final slope is at least 2%, but I’d go 4% in my climate.
