I use the method to clean my glass topped that Betsy described and it works very well. Make sure you wear gloves because that towel that you put on the stove top has to be VERY hot and you could easily burn your hands.

I use windex, if you are talking about glass top stoves Weimann makes a heavy duty cleaner.
Boil the grates if realy bad in water and dish soap about 10 min
