How to repair old paneled walls?

by Joan

We had the 1970s paneled walls in our house painted several years ago. Turned out great except for one bedroom, where the surface of the panel has lifted or buckled. It isn't the whole piece of panel, just the surface. Vaneer? It only happened to one wall in one bedroom. Thinking we need to replace the panel on that wall and repaint--really looking for thoughts on what might have caused this.

    Hi Joan,

It could be caused from wetness or from too much heat. If it's paneling, there may be drywall behind the panels. If that's the case you should be able to remove the panels, clean up the wall and fill in any holes with wall putty, then paint the whole wall. Is it loose? Do you know if it's glued or nailed into place? If it's glued, heat can loosen the glue as you pull it off. Then sand off any that is left. Wishing you the best.

If it's an outside wall could be temperature changes, moisture or condensation behind it.

My guess would be temperature or moisture too. You will probably have to remove it to see what's behind it. 😞
