Run a small load of towels, hot water and I cup of white vinegar. After wash is done, leave lid open to dry.
I had this once. Run an empty cycle with hot water and bleach. Then run a cycle with baking soda and vinegar and hot water. After the second load leave the washer open and run a fan near it to dry the air around it. There are also prepared packs called Affresh with instructions on the box
You just need to pull the rubber back to see the mildew that's causing that bad odor. If you take an old wet sponge or rag you can wipe the area clean. It's what's making that awful smell. It's an unpleasant job but it really works. Wear gloves!
I agree with Kits response and after each washload I always leave door open to air out and dry the washing machine. If you keep door closed its wet and dark inside and never gets to dry out..
If you can take off the agitator, lift it out and check for mouldy socks!
