Hi French,
To help it stand up to dog claws, first make sure that you purchase a good sealer product. Also use several coats and be sure to follow ALL directions on the can regarding drying time and curing time. You might need to add extra coats of sealer every year, more or less. Also be sure to follow all preparation steps and don't take any short cuts. That's the biggest reason for failure. I'm sure you can find a tutorial that you like from William's post, but I just wanted to point out about the parts you specifically asked. Wishing you the best.
