Are you thinking about using a plastic shower curtain, or a plastic coated fabric shower curtain?
A plastic shower curtain will not be strong enough to withstand the stitching of seams required to either sew patterned pieces together to fit over the futon, or to sew a casing for which to thread the elastic through.
A plastic coated fabric shower curtain may be water resistant, but it will not be water proof the way solid vinyl will be, especially at the seam lines.
If you want a cover that is truly water proof, then only heavy vinyl with dense nylon seam binding will work. It can be sewn on a home sewing machine, but it does require some experience with a teflon presser foot and seam sealant.
Hello there,
My suggestion would be to lay the curtain on the frutton with wrong side showing and pin to fit. Take off and sew the seams. Repeat until you are happy with the result. Trial and error!
Conventional straight sewing pins will puncture the plastic, weakening it, and giving holes for the water to seep into. When sewing vinyl or plastic, clips or clamps are used, not pins.
Have you considered treating it with waterproof spray? Scotch Gard makes a good 1.
Instead of trying to use a shower curtain... get a waterproof mattress cover.. they have the ones that have a softer texture and are not plastic. When we bought our new futon we bought one with a zipper so that it covered both sides of the futon mattress (so we could flip the mattress) and put it inside the cover to protect the mattress..our cover can be washed.
