Usually a thick layer of crushed stone, traffic bond. A good couple inches to a foot that is compacted mechanically. Make sure there is an ever so slight slant away from the house for drainage. Once the stone pavers are laid, fine sand or stone powder is brushed into the cracks in between to grout.

I would add a border of pressure treated 2x4’s staked in, from the outside, to keep it from shifting.
