How can I create EASY window frames from which to hang curtains?

I wouln't do anything unless landlord gave written permission, to avoid violation of lease. If you're permitted to drill into walls, you can mount drapery rods and draperies. I'd discuss any window frame plans with landlord, in advance.

Hang the curtain rod hangers outside the window frames - either above them or on the sides. There is no rule that curtains have to be the same size as the windows.

Hang an expandable curtain rod over the window(s). Be sure and use drywall screws if you're drilling directly into the drywall.

Thanks everyone! I will check with landlord about it. There's nothing in the handbook. I'm leaning toward tension rods.
