How can I build a base to hold mattresses without using rails?
No rails for mattresses. Thought about small barrels to place box springs and mattress on. Maybe small boxes.

Hello Amorir! You will need to support your box spring frame all the way around the perimeter. You can make a platform for your bed or place it on the floor for the best support. Here's one idea that does use wooden boxes! https://www.lowes.com/creative-ideas/bed-and-bath/platform-bed/project
You can buy the rails at Sam's, I think. They unfold and bolt together to fit the size bed you have. It makes a metal frame with legs about 5-6 inches tall and you just sit your box spring on it and mattress on top. You can use with it without a headboard. Or a bed store will have them. Bought mine at a thrift store. Hope this helps.
Hello.
You might want to look on Amazon there are several options to consider. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bed+slats+bars&ref=nb_sb_noss
Get screw in legs that can go on your box spring....Lowe's, or most hardware stores will have them.
Thrift shop bedframe will work.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube on how to make storage beds using a line of cubes lengthwise down the bed edge, or using old kitchen cupboards, or small bookcase, or make a simple frame using 4x4 lumber.
