How do I paint old mismatched brass candlesticks?

I have several old, tarnished , and mismatched brass candlesticks and would like to paint them in fun colors. Must I sand them? Use a special primer or paints?

Since they are metal, I would use a spray on primer first, then paint each one with Rustoleum spray paint in a different color. Two light coats are better than one too heavy dripping coat. I put them in a cardboard box to spray.... keeps things tidy.

    Hi Linda,

The surface needs to be scuffed up so I'd lightly sand them. New spray paint has a primer included, but I'm not sure that it works 100% so if it were me, I'd get a can of primer if only to hide any dark spots and to make the final color truer. And yes, I think spray paint is your best option for painting. Wishing you the best.

To repeat answer I’ve given several times, just clean the candle holders. Then spray with Rustoleum 2X. This paint comes in many modern, coordinating colors, like five shades of blue-green. I love it. Jewell
