How do I paint old wood floors without using a primer?
I moved into this home a few years ago, the previous owner redid the floors in the bedrooms but not the hallway. I want to paint them light grey with as little effort as possible. A rustic look is fine with me. Anything will be an improvement. Thank you in advance for your suggestions..

Maybe this article will help with your decision. I prime everything because I don't want to re-do my work but others skip it.

Clean with TSP and then send the sheen off using a pole sander, clean off dust, prime with Oil based primer and paint. Lightly sand between coats.
You already have grey walls, why not refinish the hallway? Once you put down paint, it's hard to get it back to natural wood.

I used brown glidden floor paint from Wal-Mart. I believe ot was paint and primer. They have a few color choices. If you dont use poly which I didn't then it can scratch but if you dont plant on sliding furniture or have big dogs it might hold up okay
I sanded mine, then took regular white paint and lightly painted them. When dry I put on some Ebony gel stain over the white. Then 1 coat of polyurethane. They are GORGEOUS!!! They turned out to be a sort of grey/brown. In the spring I will put on another coat of poly.
Why would you not want to prime? Wood can bleed through paint unless primed. Primer helps "hold" paint to whatever you are painting. There are many other reasons why people do things the way they do. Remember, most of the work is in the preparation. But, then, if you like redoing things, well I guess...
I wouldn't, but you want to paint. I would suggest good cleaning to remove dirt, wax, oil, etc. sand it to rough up the texture, clean again to get up all the dust. Prime with same color you are painting with. Good luck.
You could use paint with primer. But unless you do proper prep your work won't last.
I would honestly not paint them. Sand them bare and stain them a nice grey. It will last years longer than paint
I agree with Chel, sand and stain with a gray, painting them is ok but it will not last as long as a stain.
Or you could white wash them instead of painting them since that would allow the wood grain to show thru but you will need to sand them first.
