Paint is always an option.
Bobbie...I paint (all materials) with a good spray paint, any and all colors. You can add ribbon, jewelry, shells, etc. If you have a particular picture to put in it you may incorporate an item that belonged to the person, such as, a matchbox car, jacks, dominoes, a fly from fishing...get my drift. Just have fun with it and enjoy what you do!
That would be great Bobbie...just attach them!
You can also add a couple more layers of paint and sand them off. Keep with the rusticness the frame currently has.
Try using spray paint.
