Which type of wood is best for large west-facing deck?
Our current deck is pine and very large and gets west sun. Is wood better to use here or a manufactured wood?

Hello again Nancy, if you are not opposed to staining every 4 years or so, you could do this in cedar wood, it is rot resistant and insect resisitant.
Does your pine deck have a protective coating on it now and how is that holding up? My large deck is treated pine. I use Armstrong Clark oil based stain that has been excellent for my area of the country--northern Minnesota. It has offered good protection in both summer and winter and doesn't bubble or peel. It fades over time and needs to be redone about every 3 years. www.armstrongclarkstain.com
Manufactured decking can get very hot in the sun and since your deck is on the west side if it is not protected by trees that shade it the floor will get very hot.
No, this deck was never treated and is 21 years old. Now it just needs replacing. The support boards underneath are fine.
And we do not have any trees close by the deck.
We used a composite decking on ours. The sun is awful on it, and although the composite is more expensive up front, we liked the idea of zero maintenance! We used a gray color and we love it. If you want real work, you could use a hardwood like Ipe.
