The cheapest headboard I've ever made was using pieces of cardboard boxes that I got free at my grocery store. I cut them all into 12" squares and covered each one with quilt batting and then wrapped with fabric from a pretty floral sheet that I got at a thrift store and. I used a glue gun to attach the fabric to the back of the cardboard, and then used velcro to attach the squares to the wall. It was pretty inexpensive and I loved it.
Here ya go.
