I apply the spackle to the seam, smooth the tape into the spackle and spackle over the tape.

I prefer the self adhesive tape that isn't mesh. You cover the seam then add mud to smooth it out. Once dry, wet sand with a damp sponge wrung mostly dry. Repeat this process 2 more times for a smooth finish.
