I also wanted to add that if you need to buy a lot of sand, I'd order it online with Oriental Trading or check out Amazon over a craft store.
Another idea is to use sandbox sand and colored chalk. You can put some sand in a container and rub the chalk in it. The sand will turn the color of the chalk. Continue until it’s the color you want.
