How do I convert my tub to a shower?
How do i convert my garden tub into a shower?
It all depends what is your bath tub made out of. Cutting with saw when it is cast iron is the only solution. If it is is acrylic your job will be easier. Either way that project need professional because you will need to deal with plumbing
YOU Don't!! First, you won't find a fiberglass 'Pan' the size of your bathtub! The pan is the most critical part of a redo! If not done correctly you will have major water damage to your sub floor, walls etc. that could run in the thousands to repair! The "pan is made by first covering subfloor with waterproofing paper, then leveling off bottom with sand, and then 'hot tar' over! This should be done by a licensed professional!..I have called companies that can fiberglass over tubs,, but they wanted as much to do that as a complete tearout and tile job!...I know it is expensive,I would love to take out my old tub in guest bath and turn into a shower too, but my small mstr.bath fiberglass shower was in excess of $6,000 to tear out, install new pan, and then tile!.........Feeling your pain!!
We just took out our cast iron tub and put in a shower. Had to saw the tub in half to get it through the door. We had to tear the wall behind the tub down to the studs and then.....
The pan we bought, for the shower floor was the same size as the tub and the drain hole was in the right spot....you can get right or left side drains on the pans. We bought fiberglass panels that fit the pan. Put a couple of grab bars on the walls, and it works very well. We had to put small tile around the edge of the fiberglass walls to cover the edges, but that took only a few $. Our son did all this for us and I am sure the materials cost under $1,000 even taking all the tile off the walls and painting .. Since our son did it there was no labor costs so can't say anything about that. If you are a DIYer, it just takes time. The floor was already ceramic tile so left that. It can be done...will take awhile but is worth it.
