This is for lubrication that doesn’t stain the wood, like oil does.
are you talking about chalkpaint? If so I would wax all of it.
If you are painting with chalk paint you need to finish with a top coat to protect your chalk paint. You can use a wax formulated for use with chalk paint or you can use a clear poly. Use whited based poly if you over going over a white paint so it doesn't yellow over time.
I always do both when I paint. I even do the outsider of the drawers so they slide better.
