HI Brenda, using chalk paint, which is water based over oil paints isn't a good idea. It's not going to stick properly as the oil will repel the water. Can you sand your piece down?
Fusion Mineral Paint makes a product to paint over slick surfaces. It is called Ultra Grip. You do have to sand lightly before you use it and then let it cry/cure for 12 hours before you paint with your Mineral/chalk paint. Other brands of chalk paint may have the same kind of product.
Brenda: if you primed first... no problem!
I would lightly sand, add a primer then paint. They say you don't need to use primer with chalk paint. I never risk it. I have had lots of issue when i dont prime.
