How can I install heating under vinyl plank flooring in the basement?

Our basement is chilly in the winter. We are removing the carpet and want to install some heating under the new flooring. Under our carpet is old 1950s tile. So we would leave that then add heating then vinyl plank. Not sure if this will work.

  • Nope, sorry, will not work. You need to take the old tile out and start from scratch. And be sure the flooring you want is rated for in floor heating, as many are not.

Go to you big box building supply store or a paint store and get an asbestos test kit. Floor tile from the 1950s was likely made with asbestos in it. So if found in your old tile you should not remove it- you'll spread asbestos fibers into the air and into your lungs. But if you don't break up the tile, you can just "encapsulate" ( i.e. covering it with the new flooring) and unless the old stuff is already breaking up or showing worn out spots you will be just fine. But first get the test kit then you'll know which way to go and who to ask for help-or not.

Is it possible to install a subfloor over your old tile? You could then install the heating elements and the flooring.
