Mix vinegar and water 50/50 in a spray bottle with a couple of teaspoons of salt. Shake and spray on the metal. Let it sit until you have the look you want.
Yes, vinegar is better than sanding it. It is a zinc coating- not good to breathe.
Try a brand new green scrubby, I scratched my new stainless steel sink with a brand new one. It might give you the distressing you're looking for.
Try spray foam bathroom cleaner. Let it sit until you are happy with the results. It will take off the shine.
