Lynn: I think your hand will work best. "Elbow grease" is not over-rated. Good luck.
Clean or take off finish? Awesome cleaner at the dollar store is the best all purpose cleaner I have found. For something like spindles use an old sock or two over your hand. Start at the top and just wipe to the bottom with you hand getting all of the nooks and crannies. If you are trying to take off the finish wrap sand paper around them and do the same thing.
I have used a nylon kitchen dish brush to scrub spindles on chair, however, you need to make sure the wood doesn't scratch easily. I would test it out first.
old toothbrushes can help for small crevices. :)
There’s a tool you clean your grill or wire with but nylon they are sturdy jet gentle. I use DAWN IT KNOCKS GREASE OUT. If you have a GOOD DEGREASER, YOUR WORK IS DONE FOR YOU 🤷🏾♀️
I use a microfiber cloth like a belt, rubbing side to side.
