You can add a separate row of thin molding a few inches below the current molding then paint the space in between so it looks like it is all one piece. Or leave it the wall color so it is a double stripe look.

Make sure you have a compound mitre saw. I would advise doing a lot of practice cuts to make sure you are fitting the corners. You can do it on small pieces or scraps.
So attach smaller molding (in my case) on top of the exsisting molding to make wider molding look correct?
