I'm thinking about adding Crown molding on vaulted ceilings- thoughts?

Ooh fun! Are you planning on installing it yourself? If you have not done crown moldings before, I suggest that you watch a handful of YouTube videos. The cuts can be tricky, not impossible, but definitely tricky!

It's a matter of taste or preference . I think it would look great .

I would love to add crown moulding to our vaulted ceilings and have considered various possibilities. This is a down-the-road project for us and we have done crown moulding on flat ceilings, so we know the level of difficulty. Vaulted ceilings pose a different set of problems and we're considering the use of decorative corner moulding pieces instead of making those annoying corner angle cuts.

My vote is for some type of crown moulding, to me it always looks more "finished" and classic.

I have vaulted ceilings and have considered crown molding in the past, but decided it would look odd not to mention the cuts would be very difficult. But, its a matter of personal preference.

Crown molding on vaulted ceilings always looks classy and elegant. GO FOR IT!

Since your ceilings are so high, I would paint the ceiling color down the walls a way. then add the molding at the juncture of the paint colors. It would be more like a chair rail. You would have some tricky cutting with that short wall space, over the door.

I just sold my house with a vaulted ceiling with no crown moulding. A beautiful vaulted ceiling is a more contemporary look and simply does not suit moulding. Ceiling moulding is compatible with ceilings of more normal heights because moulding is more traditional which just does not suit the clean lines of a vaulted ceiling. Up here, vaulted ceilings cost more (when buying a new house) as they open up a room creating a larger look so I would leave well enough alone, enjoy the "open-ness" and just paint your walls a different color than the ceiling. Please DON'T put up a moulding half-way up a wall, like one suggested. It will just ruin the look of your room. Sometimes, less REALLY is more!! The less details in a room show it off better. My buyer was SO glad we had left our vaulted ceiling plain as they had viewed other homes with vaulted ceilings but they had mouldings which put them right off making an offer.

Crown molding was originally used to hang pictures. They were dust catchers and when they invented other ways to hang pictures, the crown moldings went the way of the horse & carriage. It is a lot of work to do it right and at that heighth so good luck. Some people use wallpaper borders to get the same effect. It is easier and cheaper to do.

I think doing this idea would be better, the crown molding would get lost in a room that high unless you really wanted to professionally do that.

Add larger sized and larger molding around the doors that already had molding. I hope this was of some help.

In my previous home, we wanted crown molding, but it wasn't in out budget. So we did faux crown molding.

Using gloss paint, we painted a band at the top of each wall and the outside edges of our ceilings. In some rooms, we used the same gloss white as our baseboards and doors. But for most of our ground floor we uses a dark green that complimented all of our various wall choices & light grey-green ceilings

Painter's tape is far more forgiving than the compound measurements for real crown molding.

To measure proper spacing, I used a basic dry swiffer on an extra long pole & a pencil taped to an equally long pole. Marking to measure every other foot or so, we then connected the "dots" with the tape. You obviously can use any sized object to the same effect as long as it is light enough to work over your head for an extended period.

We have a skinnier molding at our vaulted ceiling’s seams but our home is more casual and cottage like.
