Judy: be sure to tape wall or floor --- and PRIME!
Wash down with TSP. Lightly sand off sheen. Prime with oil based primer. Lightly sand again the coat with 2 coats of semi gloss oil based paint. If new trim, you don't need to wash down.
I just wipe down with denatured alcohol.
Judy....I just clean well and tape wall and floor /ceiling so I don't get paint where it doesn't need to be. I keep a damp cloth near just in case I do get paint where it shouldn't be.
Clean well. Lightly sand to remove any gloss. Prime with Kilz primer. Paint with window and trim paint.
