The only thing I do for my butterfly bush is cut it back in March every year and it comes back fuller every year. Good Luck!
Butterfly bushes are listed as invasive species. So be sure to keep it trimmed into a size that you can manage. I just received a new one last year for Mothers Day. I was surprised to learn soon after that the butterfly bush is considered invasive and can crowd out beneficial plants.
