Clean and not covered by fake chemical smell is the best smell and healthiest. Clean, dust the areas well. Even a bit of mold or urine can cause a bathroom to smell foul once moisture is added. Also let in a bit of fresh air daily. We put a small fan in the room after a shower and no smells. We also use a match after toilet use so that there isn't that fake chemical smell from sprays (read health warnings on those). If you use vinegar for cleaning don't worry the scent fades.
I wipe mine down with Simple Green, it disinfects and deodorizes at the same time.
It depends on what type of scent you want. OdoBan is a good disinfectant with a long lasting eucalyptus scent. You can wipe down then spritz in the air.
I have cinnamon scented pine cones in my dining room in a vase and the whole house smells like cinnamon.
