You can try washing them in water and vinegar with no laundry soap. This should remove any detergent buildup. Put one or two cups in the rinse cycle. Any smell will dissipate as they dry. You can also dry them with wool dryer balls. I use 5 or 6 with a load of towels.
I use fabric softener and wool dryer balls. I've heard that fabric softener reduces absorbency but I've never experienced that.

I recommend wool dryer balls. It is true that fabric softener reduces absorbency. Fabric softener is a waxy substance that fabrics absorb which leaves less room for them to absorb water. If you've ever washed a polar fleece and used fabric softener, you'll notice that it never looks/feels soft and fluffy anymore. This is the fabric softener causing fibers to clump together.
