I have used chalk spray paint very sucessfully for projects, as long as I am patient and put thin layers on (otherwise you get drips!) The brand I have used is pinty plus but as I am based in the UK I dont know if this is available to you
You would go though a lot of cans of spray paint. You still would need to prep it just like hand painting. Lightly sand to remove shine. Prime with Kilz primer. Then paint. To spray paint you would need a spray gun to spray the paint.
Any kind will cover. Even the Rustoleum for metal works on wood. The new ones are great with 2X the coverage.
Just about any kind of spray paint will work. Apply thin coats in a well ventilated space.
