One leg on a wooden dining chair has split around the bolts top to bottom. What is the best way to repair?

Hi Paula, Splits and breaks in nonstructural rungs and spindles can be repaired with glue. Separate the broken ends of the part, and apply glue to each piece. If the part is only cracked, force glue into the crack with a glue injector. Join the pieces carefully, pressing them firmly together, and remove any excess glue.

    1. Or you can try this, Fill small or narrow cracks or splits with wood glue, and clamp the sides of the crack together with a tightly screwed C-clamp. ...
    2. Use a putty knife to scoop a nickel-size clump of wood putty from the container. ...
    3. Use a wet sponge to wipe the excess putty from the leg. ...
    4. Sand the scuff or scratch very lightly to smooth.

I like to use Carpenter's glue for this problem, after putting the pieces back together, or just forcing the glue in the crack, wipe with damp cloth after tightening with your tourniquet. I would also glue a piece of wooden dowel in where the screw had been that split the wood ( then when dry you can put a smaller diameter screw in after pre-drilling the hole. I did this on my chair after a neighbor flopped down on the chair and split the leg..... its held for over 15 years now.
