It is a thick layer of minerals that have build up inside my bathtub for years

Make a paste of comet cleanser and water.rub it in ,let it set over night
Repeat til the stain is gone.
I do this periodic,I have well water and it does stain. The same in the toilet bowl. Drain the bowl first.
Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda scrub, then buff.
Ceramic or fiberglass tub?
I like Barkeepers Friend for stubborn areas -might suggest to see if that can clear away stains and mineral deposits and residue.
Because fiberglass can be easily scratched, I might suggest stick with the commercial scrubbing bubble type commercial bathroom cleaners. Baking soda can be used as well other mild detergents.
