Cool idea! I'd cut off any upward pointing posts to make it look less like a headboard.
IKEA and some DIY big box stores carry a lot of table legs in various styles.
Most of them have a metal mounting flange & 4 screw holes. Just make sure the screws are not too long.

If it has a footboard, you could lower the headboard so they are same height. The use those for 2 sides. Add a top out of a A grade plywood like birch or oak. Then tie together at the bottom at least all the way around with spindles or 1x2/1x4 (depending on the style), you might want to add additional supports in an "X" pattern for additional stability.
