You will need to make sure that you purchase a replacement that is the exact type you have now. It is a simple process and the new thermostat will have step by step instructions on wiring the new one.
Most thermostats will come with plates that will cover up the old hole if you switch it up. We replaced a rectangle with a round nest and it looks fine.
Follow the instructions for the new one, but make sure it's similar to the one you are replacing
