3po3 on Aug 11, 2012They are probably moths. They are known as bird seed moths, and they sometimes live in packaged or bulk bird seed. You need to clean out your container, replace the seed with some high-quality stuff that comes in sealed packaging and consider storing it in something with a tighter lid. There are also bird seed moth traps, but I don't have any personal experience with them and can't recommend one.Helpful Reply

Sharron W on Aug 12, 2012I think these are what we call "coddling moths" I keep my Bird seed in a plastic bin in the garage, and because there are "breathing" holes in the handles I tape over those...then I use a mesh bag like apples come in and put 2-3 Mothballs in it, and tape it to the lid so it doesn't come in contact with the food, but will discourage "critters" so far, no critters since I started doing that.... Coddling moths, oh yeah I just looked at your location so yes, they can also get into your flour, meal and cereals this time of year, so I keep my meal and flour in the refridgerator...and my oats and cereals in tupperware....Helpful Reply

Walter Reeves on Aug 12, 2012They are probably Indian meal moths. see http://www.ent.orst.edu/urban/indian_meal_moth.html As Sharron notes, DO NOT let them get started in your kitchen!Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Aug 13, 2012I will probably get some sort of infestation for posting this, but I have never had a problem with any kind of kitchen bug or moth! My hubby says it is my cooking that keeps them out! Hee, hee! He is probably right!Helpful Reply
