What is the best way to remove nails from a pallet?
-
Lisa Green on Jan 07, 2015There is an upholstery tool called a staple puller. It usually has a handle like a screwdriver and has a long steel shaft with a head that slopes. The end is about 1/2" wide with a V groove cut into the end. Place the V groove at the nail head and hammer the end of the staple puller until the nail is sitting in the back of the V and the nail is lifting out of the pallet. Slowly pry the nail up until you can pull the nail out completely. Staple pullers come in a few sizes so make sure you get one that is big & beefy that can handle the job! Hope this helps, LisaHelpful Reply

M'sMammy on Jan 07, 2015Go online and search about using pallets. I remember seeing directions on "how to deconstruct" the darn things. It said was really hard, but doable.Helpful Reply

Sheila Stewart on Jan 07, 2015Flip the board over, tap on the point of the nail so it pushes the nail head on the other side away from the board. You should be able to extract it without too much trouble. Some nails are coated with a substance to help keep them in place when they are hammered in. :)Helpful Reply

York Gardener on Jan 08, 2015Don't remove them. Take a saws-all (or whatever the tool is called) and just saw through the nails, they can add character to the new construction.Helpful Reply

Tammy Jordan-Kimball on Jan 08, 2015I always use a reciprocating saw. There is no way you will pull them out with out an electric tool. I know, I tried almost everything you can think of. You have to cut them. Have someone to help when you do it, you`ll need it. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Thomas on Jan 08, 2015If you have a power tool called a "SAWSALL" is best. If you don't have that tool they can be rented from local Home Depot or True Value stores. Also, a hand powered hacksaw will do the trick just takes more time. Good Luck with your projects.Helpful Reply

EJC Contracting And Construction LLC on Jan 23, 2015Just like @Tammy Jordan-Kimball recommended, use a reciprocating saw. Just saw the nails between the joints. This way you'll preserve the wood and also get rid from the nails without breaking the pallet. If you don't like the nails later, you can use a similar nail (or in worst case scenario some screwdriver) and a hammer to lightly push them out from the wood and using some pliers you can remove them completely from the wood. p.s.
