The escutcheon seems to be attached at the top and bottom. I don't want to damage the door as I intend to paint them

Should be some screws that hold it on the door. Sometimes they don't look like screws but decorative buttons. They also can be painted over and makes them hard to notice.

There are no screws, and the plate is tight to the doors that I can't get a small screwdrover behind it to prise it off. I could probably drill through the nails, but I really don't want to make any more mess than necessary.

I would probably remove it to paint, but then again maybe not as looking around my room I see I have painted mine!

Could you post a photo? Would help to see what you have.

There must be some way to remove them because at one time they were added. Can you see the presence of any nails/screws on the back side of the door? Are they painted in place? Is the door painted now? You could probably loosen the escutcheon up by applying a paint remover or some kind of product like wd 40. A hardware store should be able to advise you. We have a show here with a woman who restores lots of old houses. She takes hardware such as your escutcheon or hinges etc, and cooks them in water in an old crock pot and all the paint and gook falls right off.

Thanks for your help. I need a way of getting something under the escutcheon to prise it off - there are no screws, but they must have a nail like point incorporated in the design. I assume they were hammered in. I do not want to keep the escutcheonS, just remove them without damaging the doors. I think I may have to drill out the points where they are attached and then fill in the holes - there will be small holes where the pins are any way.
