How to remove ticks from a small dog
-
Laura on Jan 18, 2015I've used two different ways- both involve using tweezers. One is to apply vaseline to the tick, the though behind it being the tick can't breathe, so will loosen itself a bit, then you can use your tweezers to remove it. I've also used rubbing alcohol on the area, the tick loosens itself enough to do the same thing. Remember in any way you decide to use, grasp the tick with your tweezers gently but firmly, and please make sure that you get the whole tick- I've also seen the flea & tick drops make ticks literally drop off a dog(I worked as a vet tech for years!). I would NOT suggest using the common method of using heat or fire, that's too dangerous a procedure(although it does work) to use on any animal. I would invest in flea& tick protection for him(or her) if you'll be babysitting , ticks can pass on several diseases that in the ling rin are much more expensive than the prevention, fleas can also, for that matter. Good luck, and have a great time with your Grandfurkid!Helpful Reply

Terri on Jan 18, 2015We live in Wisconsin and end up with upwards of 100 ticks per season. We just get a good hold on them and pull them out. i've never had an animal have any reaction. they make more of a fuss if you spend all that time monkeying around (the dog, not the tick) lolHelpful Reply

Rdr2130050 on Oct 24, 2015This has worked for me for years. Lip bom (ChapStick type) I keep two with me while camping or hiking in the woods, marked one for tick removal, the other one for it's original use. Rub a good amount on the tick, (to cut off air) tick will fall off. Much safer than burning, pulling off, head of tick could stay buryed causing infection. I used this on my children as well as out pets. It has never failed... no crying and no pain.Helpful Reply
