We have some not so great cabinets in our kitchen, we have already painted the inside panel but the brush marks show so it was not a great job. Would like to go with lighter (maybe even white) and redo them all but have some beautiful wood "furniture" a dry sink and a hall tree that have their perfect places in the kitchen but don't know if white or painting the wood cabinets is a good idea and would make the wood stuff look out of place? I do like the wood but I know it is old.... Any thoughts? Will try to post a photo later....

Try painting with a small sponge roller , no brush marks and a smooth finish . You can mix your wood furniture with the white cabinets .. I would leave the hall tree and dry sink wood for a while to see if you like it with the cabinets ,and if you don't you can always paint them . Be sure to clean your cabinets with tsp (tri sodium phosphate ) before you paint them .and rinse well.

If you want a professional look it is imperative to invest in a great brush and take very good care of the brush, Also better paint. I've seen some brand at a paint store paint guaranteed not to show brush stocks.

Professionals hang the cabinets and use good paint in a good sprayer. If you don't have that option, not only a good brush is imperative, but also a good paint. Sherwin Williams ProClassic Waterbased Acrylic-Alkyd is a self-leveling paint that is very good. Hope this helps, and happy painting!

Add a product called Flotroel to your paint. Regardless of which brand paint you use. I recommend Benjamin Moore or if you have a Coronado Paint dealer use Rust-scat gloss. Worth extra cost. Will help paint to "lay" down. Slows drying time. Cabinets will be silky smooth. Lowes, Home depot or a local paint store carry the product.

Great ideas....but the cabinets have wood trim which need to be trimmed out as you paint the center panels...did try the additive to the paint also...trying to post some pix to get at the question of whether I should redo everything choosing some color (white perhaps) or repaint without brush marks keeping the wood part to go with the hall tree and dry sink???

I have painted wooden kitchen cabinets for a friend. My advice is PREP well. With my friend and her 2 daughters, we took the doors outside and washed them all down with TSP. Then used Klean Strip Sander De-glosser, a good primer and good paint. Like Nancy, I LOVE Sherwin Williams ProClassic Waterbased Acrylic-Alkyd because it does self level and does not show any brush marks. Also use a good brush like Purdy's. I recommend Flotroel extender if the paint gets sticky too fast. (Check with your paint store. There was one BM paint where I had to by a special brand of extender.) We did not need it for the SW paint. I did this two years ago and the paint has held up perfectly. Remember to be somewhat gentle for the first month until the paint has time to cure. It was a big job but the results were BIG too. They just love the transformation! Good Luck!
