I wouldn't go full tilt with a power sander first, try hand sanding out the scratches (if they're too deep, then you can resort to a power sander.) Remember to sand in the direction of the wood grain, and finish with a finer grit paper. The hard part is matching the stain (hopefully you know what the stain brand/color is already?) If not, take a picture with your phone & take it to the store with you. You may have to do more than one coat of stain. Then finish with a coat of varnish. You may not be able to completely eliminate the scratches but should be able to diminish them. I feel for you, I have a pug who does NOT like to be on the other side of a closed door from her humans! I had to sand and restain a couple of poplar doors before I learned to double check to make sure I wasn't accidentally shutting her in a room!

I/2 boiled linseed oil and 1/2 mineral spirits. Mix the two together, apply to the scratches, let it sit a minute or two then wipe off any excess. I've been making this mixture for years and I use it regularly. I even bottle it and give to my clients.

Take the meat of a walnut and rub on the scratch. I used that on my oak table and worked well.

I read that you can take a banana peel and rub on scratch to conceal it. I have concealed scratches by buying a small container of matching stain and dip a cloth in it and rubbed over the entire piece of furniture. Then take a clean cloth and rub over the furniture again removing excess stain. It worked well on the piece I worked on and all the little nicks and scratches disappeared.

After repairing door I would attach a clear plastic cover to protect in the future. I think they attach easily. Check for door protectors.
