Wanda, A wide blade puddy knife will work. They also make scrappers that are on a pole. The pole ones are easier. You can work from the ground and not a ladder. Simply scrape all the popcorn off. Make sure you put some drop cloths down. It gets messy. After all the popcorn is down, you will have to do some sanding to smooth things out. Once you have a smooth surface, you can re-texture or paint.
  • Hi Wanda, Cover everything on the ground with plastic, this will make a huge mess. Use a pump sprayer to spray down the popcorn. You want it sort of wet, but not soaked. You should then be able to use a wide bladed scraper or drywall mud knife to scrape it off. Use drywall joint compound the skim the surface afterwards and make it smooth.
  • How old is your home? If it is older than 1987 then I suggest you get your ceiling tested for the presence of asbestos, you can buy a test kit at an home improvement store and if tested positive leave it to the professionals as this can be hazardous and is better when left to the professionals to handle removal of popcorn texture from your ceiling.
