How about installing a shade sail? Those have a pretty simple installation, they're not bulky, and they're very effective.
I like the shade sail idea but if you can't attach anything how about a couple of beach umbrellas? They can be set up and removed each time you want to use them....or table umbrellas that set up in stands.
