I hadn't thought of using rebar as plant stakes. They are heavy but certainly sturdy. I wonder if using some sort of sealer would help protect the plants and soil. Interesting idea!
You could use PVC to be safe. I don't know that there is anything harmful about copper pipes, as you see it's even one suggestion in this article about stakes for gardening: http://homeguides.sfgate.com/ideas-homemade-garden-stakes-40814.html
i have used hangers, chop sticks, and leftover rebar for plant stakes with no harm to the plants.
Are you kidding me? Rebar is my all time go-to for staking everything in the garden, trellises, plants, you name it. I even spray paint it! Go for it!

Thank you so much for your answers. I made tomato trellises with rebar and then got to thinking , “I hope it’s ok for the plants”. I guess I won’t rip them out. Haha.
