I want to make an "L" shape kitchen for a playhouse we are building.

Four little girls (3 of them the same age) will be sharing this playhouse so I want it to be a place they will enjoy now (age 4) and when they are 6, and even age 10. So, I want the cabinets to look ageless and functionable for all ages. My carpentry skills are extremely limited. This will be in the corner of an 8 X 10 playhouse, ideally about 29" tall and 15" (max) deep. It will be topped with 15" shelving and Formica or tile. I am considering 3 telephone stands with louvered doors (2 for window wall and one on other wall, leaving corner a hollow space covered by countertop. Or, 3 overhead cabinets, with backs cut out to make them the right depth, and placed on a 4" platform to allow toe room. We plan to make a stovetop on a cutting board that can be tucked away, and the sink will be a bowl. Small faucet will be installed for appearance only. Please advise me. Is that feasible? Do you see any problems a novice might encounter? Any suggestions to make the project more economical without sacrificing professional look?

Your idea sounds good to me. If you have these items it’s a no cost solution. I also frequent our local Habitat for Humanity Restore, which sometimes has great deals on used cabinets and parts.

Wow! Your girls will have a fantastic playhouse to enjoy and remember! At age 7, my dad built my playhouse, it was, and still is a treasured remembrance. When my dad sold the family home, the playhouse was dismantled, moved to my business property, enlarged, and turned into a drive-up coffee shop. I am 7 years old “again” and still playing in my playhouse. So special and thoughtful, your girls will love your effort.
